A surgically created low hairline can be a very gratifying procedure for a patient to have. This type of procedure can help a patient feel more confident and balanced with the rest of their facial features. Changing your hair styling techniques is the easiest way to change how your hairline looks. This can include changing the way you wear your hair, using a wig or even microblading.
Some patients have a naturally low hairline or a widow’s peak that they would like to address by reducing their forehead size with a surgical procedure. This is called forehead reduction, or hairline lowering surgery and it can be done by moving the scalp forward with either a one-stage or two-stage procedure.
During a one-stage hairline lowering surgery, the plastic surgeon will mark out your new planned hairline and loosen the hair-bearing scalp tissues with an incision. This allows them to advance the scalp forward anywhere from a few centimeters to three or four centimeters and remove any excess scalp tissue before closing the incision. Some patients have very thick and dense skin, so they may require a multi-stage procedure in order to achieve the desired results.
In some cases, the outer limit of a hairline should be considered temple hair, and any line that extends further than this should be referred to as a “combover”. A combover can look very unnatural, so it is important to consider your hairline placement carefully when deciding on a procedure.
